Doncaster failed to gain re-election to the League at the end of the 1902/03 season (voting details). They spent one season in the Midland League before being re-elected to the League at the end of 1903/04 - 1903/04 Midland League table and voting details.

After finishing a distant bottom of the League in their first season back, Doncaster failed in their bid for re-election (voting details). A further spell in the Midland League followed until they were elected to an enlarged Division 3 (North) at the end of 1922/23 - 1922/23 Midland League table and election details.

By finishing bottom of the League, Doncaster were relegated to the Conference at the end of the 1997/98 season, being replaced by Conference champions Halifax Town. They spent five seasons in the Conference before becoming the first club to gain a Football League place via the Conference play-offs at the end of 2002/03 - 2002/03 Conference table and play-off details.

* Newly elected back into the Football League, Doncaster scratched from the FA Cup in 1923/24  rather than play through the qualifying rounds of the competition. They had been drawn away to Fryston Colliery in the Preliminary Round and would have had to successfully negotiate seven qualifying rounds to gain a place in the competition proper.

** The 2019/20 season ended early because of the coronavirus pandemic with the last League 1 matches being played on Tuesday March 10th. A points per game (PPG) system was then used to decide final League placings - Doncaster finished 9th using both the PPG system and the traditional points system.
