Wigan Athletic made their debut in the Football League, drawing their first match 0-0 away to Hereford United on Saturday August 19th 1978.

Reading didn't concede a goal in the last 11 League matches of their championship winning season, equalling the 11 match records of Millwall (1925/26) and York City (1973/74). Goalkeeper Steve Death appeared in all those 11 matches and equalled the record set by York's Graeme Crawford in 1973/74.
