After making their name as cup-fighters Hereford United made their debut in the Football League in 1972/73. Their first home fixture against Reading saw the newcomers win by 3-0.

David Icke played 37 times for Hereford in 1972/73 as goalkeeper. Those matches proved to be the only ones he played in the Football League with arthritis then ending his playing career painfully early. He went on to became a household name as a BBC sports presenter which was followed by him becoming a household name as the 'Son of God'. Sad.
