Finishing bottom of the Football League in 1996/97, Hereford United were relegated to the Vauxhall Conference with Conference champions Macclesfield Town being promoted to take their place. 1996/97 Vauxhall Conference table. Hereford regained their place in the Football League for the start of the 2006/07 season when they won the Conference play-offs at the end of 2005/06  (2005/06 Conference table and play-off details).
