When Arsenal finished the 1914/15 season in 5th place they were outside the promotion places but when football resumed after the carnage of the First World War they were in the First Division. Why? It was agreed after the war that the First Division would be increased by two clubs. The previous increase of the top division came about by promoting the top two in Division 2 and no relegation from Division 1. This time things were different. The top two were promoted from Division 2, one club from the Division 1 relegation area (Chelsea) was invited to remain in Division while the other was included in a vote with six sides from the Second Division. Arsenal won that vote (voting details) and a place in Division 1. That still provokes controversy, particular with fans of neighbours  Spurs - they were the club that suffered relegation from Division 1. Arsenal never looked back - they have been in the top flight ever since which is the longest uninterrupted spell in the top division.
