Ronnie Rooke
 (Arsenal)
 33  goals

The highest-ever Football League attendance was recorded on Saturday 17th January 1948 when 83,260 saw Manchester United play Arsenal. The match - played at Maine Road - ended 1-1.

Matt Busby won his first honour as Manchester United manager when he led them to an FA Cup final triumph over Blackpool in 1948. Uniquely, every one of United's FA Cup victims during that run came from the top division.

In a remarkable family double Denis and Leslie Compton played alongside each other at football in Arsenal's League Championship of 1947/48 and at cricket in Middlesex's County Championship title in 1947.
