On Monday April 16th 2001 the Division 3 match between Southend United and Mansfield Town was abandoned shortly before half-time when referee Mike North collapsed in the centre circle and died of a heart attack.

The agenda was simple for the last match of the season between Barnet and Torquay - the losing side would drop out of the Football League. Torquay won the match 3-2 at Underhill and so ended Barnet's ten years of Football League membership....for the moment!
