Manchester United withdrew from the FA Cup (they were the holders) in order to compete in the inaugural FIFA Club World Champions in Brazil which was held at the same time as the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. It was far from a universally popular decision. However with the boost it was expected to give to United's worldwide reputation (and presumably marketing potential) plus the prestige it would give to English football shortly before the vote to stage the 2006 World Cup finals swayed the club's decision to take part. Most wished that they hadn't bothered!
