      PREMIER LEAGUE    1996/97

Leading League goalscorer:
Alan Shearer
 (Newcastle United)
 25  goals

September 1996 and football fans wake up to the news that Tony Adams is an alcoholic.

More light-heartedly,  perhaps the greatest footballing hoax saw the worst-ever player to appear in the Premier League make his brief debut.
Whoops!

Full home and away table

* Middlesbrough had 3 points deducted for the unauthorised calling off of their match at Blackburn in December when they had team selection problems due to injuries and illness. The points deduction saw them relegated - a sad ending to a season which had also seen them beaten in the finals of both the FA Cup and Coca Cola Cup - postponed matches.
