* On August 24th 1968 The First Division fixture between Nottingham Forest and eventual champions Leeds United was halted when a fire broke out in the Main Stand. Although the wooden stand was destroyed in similar circumstances to the Valley Parade tragedy of 1985 thankfully none of the 31,126 fans present at the City Ground that day suffered injury. The match was abandoned shortly before half time with the score at 1-1 - match void.

The damage meant that the next six home matches had to be staged at the Meadow Lane home of Notts County (matches marked **). Forest didn't win any of those six matches but to be fair they found it difficult to win at any ground they played at in the 1968/69 season. Matt Gillies replaced Johnny Carey as manager but it was only a half-decent set of results in the six League matches they played at home on the trot in March that kept them out of the Second Division. I think if you had suggested that in ten years time Nottingham Forest would be retaining the European Cup you would have been considered just a tad barking.

So, what wouldn't you make freely available to an alcoholic ex-footballer about to appear in a chat show on live national television?
Guess what George Best was given?
