  Leading League goalscorer:
Bobby Smith
(Tottenham Hotspur)
 36  goals

After a record 57 consecutive seasons in the top flight Sunderland suffer relegation (the record is now held by Arsenal).

Manchester City became the only side in Football League history to both score and concede a century of League goals in a season.

For the third season in a row Leeds United were drawn at home to Cardiff City in the Third Round of the FA Cup - and on each occasion Leeds were beaten 2-1.

Jimmy Greaves made his League debut for Chelsea (scoring against Spurs) and later scored his first hat-trick (he scored 4 in total) against Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge on Christmas Day 1957
(Christmas Day football).
