  Leading League goalscorer:
Tommy Briggs
(Grimsby Town)
 35  goals

Sheffield Wednesday pipped neighbours Sheffield United by the narrowest of margins in the race for the second promotion spot - just -007 of a goal! Under the later goal difference rules United would have gone up (same goal difference but United had scored one more goal) but under the goal average rules of the day Wednesday won promotion. But had United scored one more goal - or Wednesday had conceded one more - it would have been enough to change those positions!
