Swindon Town could hardly have hoped for a better debut in the Football League as in their first match in the competition, on Saturday August 28th 1920, they defeated Luton Town 9-1. The result is still their best League victory to this day. Mind you they soon came down to earth, losing the return League fixture at Luton, played a week later, 0-2.

Transfer Grimsby were transferred to the newly-formed Division 3 (North) and Crystal Palace were promoted to Division 2. 

     
     

R A new third division was added in 1921/22 (the northern section) with the existing third division being renamed Division 3 (South). Re-election candidates Brentford and Gillingham were re-elected without a vote. As Grimsby were transferred to the Northern section and Crystal Palace were promoted to Division 2 with Stockport being relegated from the Second Division to the northern section, two vacancies existed the southern section. Aberdare competed in the Southern League Welsh section (League table) and Charlton Athletic in the Southern League English section.

Division 3 (North) was to consist of 20 clubs. Transferred Walsall and relegated Stockport were joined by 14 clubs who were accepted en bloc at a special League meeting in March 1921, these clubs being Accrington Stanley, Ashington, Barrow, Chesterfield, Crewe Alexandra, Darlington. Durham City, Hartlepools United, Lincoln City, Nelson, Rochdale, Tranmere Rovers, Walsall and Wrexham. The remaining four places were voted on at the League AGM. Voting -

Of the new northern clubs Walsall and Wrexham had competed in the Birmingham League (League table), Crewe Alexandra, Nelson, Rochdale, Southport, Stalybridge Celtic and Tranmere Rovers in the Central League (League table), Accrington Stanley, Barrow and Wigan Borough in the Lancashire Combination, Chesterfield, Halifax Town and Lincoln City in the Midland League (League table),  and Ashington, Darlington, Durham City and Hartlepools United in the North-Eastern League (League table).
