Sunderland managed just two points from their first seven League matches, still the worst ever start to a season by a club who were to become the eventual League champions. They won 25 of their remaining 31 matches to take the title by four points, setting a new First Division record of 54 points for the season.

Sunderland missed out on a League and Cup double when beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa in the FA Cup final. The 120,081 crowd at the Crystal Palace set a new record for an attendance in England which has only been bettered once since - at the 1923 FA Cup final which was the first match at Wembley Stadium.
