For the first time there were qualifying rounds in the FA Cup with round of entry being decided on previous performance and not League membership. Stoke, along with Bolton Wanderers and Notts County, were required to compete in the qualifying rounds with no allowance made for postponing League matches which clashed with FA Cup ties. As a result Stoke were required to play two matches on the same day on October 6th 1888 - at Preston North End in the League and at home to Warwick County in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. The first team played at eventual champions Preston (and lost 0-7) while the reserves entertained Warwick County and also lost (1-2) and so Stoke became the first ever League club to be defeated by non-league opposition in the FA Cup.
