      MANCHESTER UNITED   1977/78
      European Cup Winners Cup

* Manchester United found themselves in disciplinary trouble as a result of their fans rioting in the match against St Etienne in France. Originally they were expelled from the competition but on appeal the punishment became a fine and a requirement to play the second leg at least 300 km from Manchester. The 'home' match was therefore staged at Plymouth.

Manchester United qualified for the ECWC as FA Cup holders following their 2-1 defeat of Liverpool in the 1976/77 FA Cup final.
