      * Swindon earned the right to play in the First Division by winning the play-offs (see below) but as a punishment for breach of League rules (mainly illegal payments to players) they were relegated to the Third Division, later reduced to relegation back to the Second Division. The club they beat in the play-off final, Sunderland, were promoted in their place to the First Division.
