Wimbledon made their debut in the Football League in a 3-3 draw with Halifax Town at Plough Lane on August 20th 1977. That was just 14 years after they had won the FA Amateur Cup while 11 years later they were to win the FA Cup.

At the other end of the table Southport lost their place in the Football League that they had held since the 1921/22 season,  to Wigan Athletic. Southport issued a souvenir programme to mark  their last home game, against Huddersfield on April 22nd 1978.
