Spiralling transfer fees hit the
headlines in February 1905 when the first £1000 fee was paid for a
player. England international Alf Common was the player in question,
moving from Sunderland to Middlesbrough.
The weather robbed Everton of
recording their second League championship in 1904/05. Their match at
Woolwich Arsenal in November was abandoned after 76 minutes due to fog
with Everton leading 3-1. When the match was eventually played again, just
before the end of the season when they had to play 3 matches in 4 days, Everton lost 2-1. If the original match had
been completed (and if the scoreline had remained the same), Everton would
have pipped Newcastle to the title by a point.
